Cabin design for Wild Child Village as part of the expansion of their retreat center. Their dream was to have a pyramid-shaped cabin. This poses an interesting design challenge as having 4 slanted walls diminishes the usable interior area. By intersecting an elongated pyramid with a smaller A-frame volume and by lowering part of the floor the usable area is increased while retaining a pyramid-like feature. The interior borrows cues from the forest while also offering comfort and intimacy.

Structural design & execution of a set for Zo Vader Zo Zoon, a theatre production that will travel to 67 different venues across the country. The whole thing slots together like a jigsaw puzzle using simple hinges and bolts. Done with my buddies at Goed!Bezig Producties.

A-Z renovation of a worn and dreary 60’s 2-bedroom. By refurbishing a second-hand kitchen, floor and furniture the total spend was kept below €14.000. The palette is tranquil and minimal with lots of natural materials and patina. As the apartment was to become a rental, microcement was chosen for the bathroom and toilet. In addition to its beauty this material is durable and easy to keep clean. Floors: American Walnut.

Showcase dome for Domegaia, a Hawaii-based company that pioneered the building of domes out of aircrete bricks. To sell their services worldwide Domegaia needed a signature style and construction methodology for their interiors.

Curves and rounded shapes throughout continue the form language inherent to domes. Material and colour choices are warm and rich in texture. The result is both soothing and uplifting, fitting the beautiful natural setting. 

Stained magnesium oxide floors, bamboo supports and divider, mahogany stairs, pine window frames, concrete window trim and platform. Done together with Gabriel de la Cruz. 

Cast concrete & microcement kitchen for a Bed & Breakfast under construction in Malta. Digging around the site of the 500 year old historic building the owners found remnants of a basement. After excavation it provided the perfect space to build a communal kitchen. 

Aiming to be as durable as the building itself, the entire unit was cast out of 10cm thick fiber- and mesh-reinforced concrete. Several coats of white microcement create a pleasing contrast with the old limestone walls. The salvaged timber shelves sit well with the aged patina of the space.

Twin outdoor shower cabins for budding retreat center Eco Maste. The spiral design provides visual privacy from the front while offering views of the lush Costa Rican jungle towards the back. The walls are made of locally harvested Phyllostachys Bamboo, which was burned and varnished to enhance its striking aesthetic qualities. The concrete platform sits on salvaged Purple Heart hardwood posts which can last 80+ years sitting directly in the soil.

Together with City of Melbourne and RMIT University I turned a shipping container into a flexible community center that bridges cultures in one of the city’s housing projects. The Live House was built to facilitate dance performances, tea rituals, food events and musical improv. The low-fi, friendly aesthetic make the Live House approachable. More than sleek design output the project was about working closely with the community residents to give them a sense of ownership. The Live House was avidly used during the year it was on site, leading to friendships and even a marriage and child.

When left alone with lots of rough-cut timber. The challenge here was that only basic powertools were available (circular saw, drill, sander).
